Process
Here is an overview of the general process to create an artwork, outlining the main steps that guide the process from start to finish. This simplified breakdown highlights the main phases involved, from initial concept and sketching to refining details and final adjustments.
Sketch
The first step is to gather reference material to ensure the accuracy of design elements. Afterwards I create a rough sketch to figure out the composition.
Flat Colors
Next, I apply flat colors, which later will serve as selection areas. Sometimes I may add an initial black and white value stage to test the tonal range and ensure the lighting and contrast are effectively set.
Adding Light and Shadow
I use varies layers on blending modes and adjustment layers to set the main light and shadow areas. I find this step aside from the sketch phase most important since it determines the overall feel of the finished artwork.
Detailing
While adding details to the piece, it's important to pay attention to the value range, saturation and contrast of the overlapping areas. This is particularly important in environment artworks since it creates the sense of depth.
Finish
Finally I use adjustment layers to push colors and values in the desired direction for more visual impact.
